about

About Celestia
The Japan-based American duo Celestia performs and records original compositions, arrangements and improvisations that shift from the cosmic to the intimate — from cataclysmic events in deep space to the gentle rustling of leaves in a forest.

Celestia’s music is at once ancient and modern, “time tested” and “being tested,” nostalgically melodic and searchingly improvisational. In it, Zen meditation joins rock, trance and ambient. The shakuhachi, which has an over 600-year history, is paired with the pixiechord, an experimental, one-of-a kind keyboard that has less than a 10-years in its ongoing development.

About the Members
In 2018 composer, instrument inventor, and visionary sonic explorer Sami Elu joined shakuhachi veteran Bruce Huebner to create the duo Celestia. Through recording, composing and live concerts on tour they have developed a symbiotic love of hands-on music making and improvisation that aims at impressionistic, cinematic, and thoughtful soundscapes where the only borders we feel are between land and sea, sky and space.

About Celestia’s New Album
Celestia’s first official album was released in the fall of 2020. Japanese children’s songs and folk tunes are arranged with a telescopic lens, each track an impressionist pastoral scene. Sleepy villages, rivers and mountain ranges, children playing, festive occasions, the sea sun and moon appear as flourishes from the shakuhachi and twinkling passages of pixiechord.
