about

These “Orcas Takes” were recorded at Susan’s Songhouse Studio on Orcas Island in 2010. Orcas Island is a subtly beautiful place with rocky beaches, deep forests and the sea and sky always close by. The ferry ride to the island gives a sensation of separation from life back on land. The calm Susan and Dave’s home and the drama of the surroundings bathed us for four days and made these sounds possible.

Because of the proximity of the recording to the living space at Susan’s house we were able to saunter into the studio and record — morning, noon or night. There are no preset compositions — Curt set up a tuning on the koto and we began improvising. The tuning of the thirteen strings on the koto and the length of the shakuhachi naturally became the parameters. Sometimes the instruments are in the driver’s seat — almost dictating to us in reverse. It is in these rare moments the music is allowed to go beyond Japan or America to a deeper and more elemental aspect of the traditional instruments and ourselves.

The poise and calm we achieved under Susan’s wing is such a precious and ephemeral thing. So much has happened in the decade that has passed since those four dream-like days— the disasters of 3/11 in Japan, the frightening changes in world politics, the looming catastrophe of man-made climate change. The times seem to be beckoning to us to release this music and continue to heed Susan’s constant call to “keep your heads in the music, and keep playing!“
